SIXTY AND SAVVY

HOW DID WE GET HERE AND WHAT'S AHEAD?

What artists or types of music do you like now? Is it different than when you were younger?

My first preference is always Jazz....then I move across to things like Enya, or the one's that are retro, I can't for the life of me remember the artist's names right now (noooo coffee yet:) but was it Manilow who came out with that CD about three years ago with all the older songs brought back? I'm stopping, because I'm embarrassing myself with my lack of information:) I know what I like when I hear it though!
Yes, it's different from when I was young, then I had all the rock n' roll stations tuned in...Beachboys, Ricky Nelson, Fabian, The Beatles, The Supremes......(and the beat goes on.......;)

...:) how about multi-faceted?...that definition always works for me...plus, if you're multi-faceted, that's a heck of a fishing lure:)

I am very lucky. My son composes rock/jazz/fusion both for his own purposes and group collaberation composes with a professional up and coming band called Manolete in Detroit metro area.

They do not sound like any of the bands I listened to when I was his age: The Beatles, The Who, The Doors, Buffalo-Springfield, The Byrds, The Rolling Stones and so many more.

I am and always will be a Motown kind of gal, I love all the oldies but goodies. Like Etta James singing "At Last." Love the Drifters, Martha and the Vandellas, Jackie Wilson, Stevie Wonder etc. I could fill an entire page with all the talent from the 50's era... Now I listen a lot to "slow jazz" here on Vegas station on 105.7.

I love many of the oldies; Jim Croce, The Eagles, Dan Fogelberg, "Young Elvis", Ricky Nelson (I'm with you, Loretta) but I really like Bon Jovi and John Mellencamp, too. And, still like classic country.

I love country music the most now, but never did when I was younger. My favorite in high school was Bobby Vee. I still like some of the oldies also. I just put up a photo here with Ronnie Rice, formerly of the New Colony Six, who has been singing solo for quite some time. We usually see him every year somewhere in a neighborhood concert. I also enjoy Bon Jovi, Engelbert Humperdinck, Sarah Brightman and Andrea Boccelli. Some heavy metal, but not much.

One of my hobbies right now is Brazilian music of the 50s and 60s, the period that saw the birth and early development of Bossa Nova and of inspired luminaries like João Gilberto, Vinícius de Morães, Tom Jobim, Nara Leão, Elis Regina, among others. The music itself is delightful, and the history of its origins fascinating.

Otherwise, and though my preferences run to more traditional forms like classical and jazz, I still like R&B greats, Rock (the first record I ever bought with my own money was Bill Halley's "Rock Around the Clock," pop music, and I can even wallow in my beer with the C&W crowd.

The only "music" I don't like is Rap. It may be that I don't understand it, but it seems to be mostly clumsy attempts at something like repetitive poetry with a monotonous rhythm behind it. If I have offended anyone, then enlighten me. Otherwise, I fail to see anything redeeming or, except to social workers and law enforcement, interesting about it.

I mostly like blue grass gospel, country gospel, the old time fifties music and especially Elvis. His gospel album is great. The country today is too much like rock and roll and I prefer the old time songs sung by Willie Nelson, George Jones, Loretta Lynn..... Shirley

Opera, blues, hip-hop, do-wop, some rap, funk, some rock 'n' roll, jazz, classical.

Some favorite artists: Mavis Staples, Dr. John, Ry Cooder, Buddy Guy, Son Seals, Allman Bros., any Italian opera (especially Verdi's), Joe Bonamassa, B.B. King, Johnny Winter, some gospel, Sinatra, etc.

Don't listen to: soft-rock, oldies, anything with an organ, country, C&W, "crooners."

Call me a crusty old so and so, but I don't particularly like any of the latest music trends. The thump thump gives me a headache and when the kids next door play their music (if you could call it that), and I am in bed, not only can I hear it, but I feel the vibrations too. Oh please, give me Gene Pitney, Bobbie Vinton, Glen Campbell, Peter, Paul and Mary or the Bee Gees.
